Group Lessons

Group lessons are supplemental to private lessons.  This gives students an opportunity to 'practice performing', learn about music history, go deeper into music theory and play challenging team games.

Here are some of our previous group lessons.

III.  Notation
IV.  Rhythm & Listening

"Practice Performing"

Students not only get a chance to practice their recital piece(s) for others, they get exposed to other music, and learn about concepts in performing:

-A proper bow

-'Approach' when starting a piece

-'Release' when finishing a piece

"The music starts with your hands in your lap."

"Color" in Music (Spice)

I prefer to use the word "spice" in music as opposed to "color", which is more commonly used in an academic setting.  The word "spice" gets emotional responses.

-Group discussion on what adds "spice" to our music.

--Dynamics - F, mf, mp, P, crescendos, diminuendos, accents

--Tempo - Adagio, moderato, allegro, ritardando, accelerando

--Articulation - Legato & staccato

--Voicing

-Demonstration of Ravel's Prelude (1913) played twice:

---1st time played without the "spice"

---2nd time played with "spice"

-Short discussion on the differences between the playing of the two Ravel pieces - the spices used or colors heard.

Notation

-Students learn how to write quarter notes, half notes, quarter rests, treble clef and bass clef on the grand staff.

Rhythm & Listening

Understanding rhythm can be challenging.  To reinforce this we did multiple listening, counting & clapping and notation exercises with four different rhythms.
